Hey guys! I hope that you all had an amazing Christmas and New Year! For the first post of 2019, I’m coming with something a bit different, but definitely exciting. Technology advancements are coming along in leaps and bounds right now. This is even noticeable in the beauty industry, including with the product featured in today’s post. 

The Sanyei ION-Sei Electric Toothbrush is a toothbrush for the modern day. It uses ionic "superpowers" to clean the teeth and to provide you with healthier teeth and gums with the use of its patented technology. They say that whilst most electric toothbrushes only remove some of the bacteria and plaque on the teeth, the ION-Sei’s ionic technology suppresses the bacteria that leads to plaque from forming in the first place. 

This works by the use of an Ultra Violet LED light reacting with a bar of Titanium Dioxide placed in the toothbrush head handle to create the ions that remove the bacteria. The negative electrons reach your mouth via water or saliva. A conductor on the handle also works with your body’s natural electrical charge to create a bacterial growth inhibiting charge that draws bacteria onto the brush from the teeth.

The ion cleaning method also means that you can clean your teeth with just water, only using toothpaste if you want to.

Whilst all of that is happening, the toothbrush is vibrating at 31,000 strokes a minute to deep clean your teeth. 

Now that’s pretty amazing sounding, right? 

It comes in two colours: white (called Day White) and a baby blue colour (called Lake Blue). I have the blue shade to show you today.

It is a sleek, lightweight brush that looks great sitting in any bathroom. It also comes packaged with a UK plug and an EU adapter. 

Use and Thoughts:

The first thing that I noticed with the ION-Sei Electric Toothbrush is that it is incredibly light to hold, about the weight of my regular toothbrush. 

It has 3 power settings; sensitive (a slow speed), standard (a medium speed) and deep clean (high speed). You press the power button once to turn it on, and then again to shift through the speeds. One thing that I like about this brush is that it remembers which setting was last used, so when you turn the power on it will instantly go to that setting. This is helpful if you like the deep clean setting as you then don’t need to press the button three times to turn it on each use. 

It has a built in timer, so it turns off after two minutes. This is a great way to make sure that you’re brushing your teeth for the right amount of time. It also stops every 30 seconds which acts as a great notifier to move on to the next area of your mouth. 

To test it out, I’ve been using it with and without toothpaste. Toothpaste in the morning, no toothpaste at night. 

In both cases, the brush heads have been gentle enough on all settings, with or without toothpaste. The deep clean setting can make the gums a little sore if overused, so it’s not a setting that I would recommend using permanently. With that said, I haven’t tried consistently using the deep clean setting with the sensitive brush head yet, so I’m not sure if that is a viable, alternative option. 

I’ve found that even without toothpaste the teeth are left feeling incredibly clean. As I’ve been using it without at night, I’ve been mainly going on how my teeth feel when I wake up in the morning, and they have been cleaner in the morning than they usually would be after brushing my teeth with my regular brush and toothpaste.

You might be a bit eager to know what to expect when using this brush, like does it feel any different when brushing? The answer to that is no, it feels like a regular, sonic electric toothbrush. You don't see the ions with your eyes, or any other crazy flashing lights or whirling noises. The most you're going to see is the UV light lighting up the brush head, so don't go into this expecting something crazy, even with all of the futuristic-sounding tech talk. 

For each full charge, you can get about 40 cleans and it takes about 10 hours for it to fully charge. 

To summarise though, the ION-Sei has been doing an amazing job at making - and keeping - my teeth feel insanely clean and polished. My regular, non-exciting toothbrush isn’t anywhere near capable of making my teeth feel this clean, so in that respect, it’s a total winner. 

I also love how the lightweight aspect of this makes it easy to travel with. The addition of two different types of plug is also welcome if you travel between the UK and mainland Europe a lot. 

The only downside I can think of is that the brush head doesn’t have a tongue cleaner on the back, but I don’t think that’s really a common feature for electric toothbrushes (not that I’m heavily clued up on the world’s range of electric toothbrushes). 

Another downside I think that others will definitely flag up is the price. This isn’t the cheapest toothbrush on the market, but with the technology working hard to prevent plaque can potentially save you money with the dentist and also on toothpaste if you decide to use it with water only, so it becomes a weighing up situation. 

Do I recommend it though? Definitely. This feels like a futuristic toothbrush to me and I am all for embracing the benefits of where technology can take us (to a point, but I feel this is a debate for another place and time). When technology advances can benefit our health - in this case our dental health - then I’m for it.
