There are two loves in the lipstick world right now: matte lipstick and liquid lipstick. Today, I have a mixture of both to show you. Matte liquid lipstick and liquid lip lacquer with a shine finish.
Avon mark. Liquid Lip Lacquer |
Yep, that's right. Enter Avon's new mark. Liquid Lip Lacquer's that come in both a matte and a shine finish. The shades are pretty much the same on both sides (with a couple of exceptions), just different finishes. There are 12 matte shades and 12 shine, bringing us to 24 in total.
The matte shades promise to leave a velvet finish and the shine shades a moisturising vinyl finish, but both of them claim to be long-wearing and to never bleed or feather.
Sadly I wasn't able to get my hands on every single shade this time, but I have got the majority of the matte shades.
Each of the lipsticks come packaged in a small, transparent, rectangle plastic tube with a wand applicator hidden in the screw cap lid. The applicator is diamond shape that claims to provide full and precise coverage in one sweep.
So let's jump on in and check out the shades that I have to show you today, and there is info on how to get hold of them at the end.
Avon mark. Liquid Lip Lacquer Matte
Avon mark. Liquid Lip Lacquer in Plump Up The Jam |
General points:
Each of the matte shades has a mousse like texture, but I find that the applicator makes for poor application with them.
If you are using the applicator, my advice with these is to be very light-handed, use gentle, feather strokes and don't rub your lips together afterwards either. Alternatively, use a different applicator. A lip brush gives you a far better finish.
I found that the lighter shades had more of a smell to them, a chemical fruity type of smell.
The medium shades are the best in regards to pigmentation, wear, vividness etc. The dark shades are actually quite thin and the lightest are rather chalky. Some shades (mainly the darkest) need a couple of layers, but then this makes them a bit too thick.
Whipped Latte
Avon mark. Liquid Lip Lacquer Matte in Whipped Latte |
Whipped Latte is a very light nude shade. Once on, this shade reminds me so hard of that old concealer lips trend which I hated back then and I'm not really feeling it here either. I seriously wanted to love this shade as in the bottle it looks great, but sadly I just can't get on with this colour. It was hard to apply without it looking patchy, but it did get better as it dried.
I did my best, but maybe someone else could get on with this better than I did.
Pinking About You
Avon mark. Liquid Lip Lacquer Matte in Pinking About You |
Pinking About You is a very pale, baby pink. This actually looks lots better in person, the photo makes it look cracked but it's far smoother than Whipped Latte. It is still pretty chalky, though. Use very gentle strokes. Don't press too hard or it streaks like mad.
Flushed
Avon mark. Liquid Lip Lacquer Matte in Flushed |
Flushed is a bright, bold pink shade. This is exactly what I was after with this range. Far better formula than the previous two shades, it is vibrant, highly pigmented, no patchiness... it's great! Does it need lip liner? Yes. Or a lip brush for more precise application.
Irresistible
Avon mark. Liquid Lip Lacquer Matte in Irrestistible |
Irresistable is a classic red shade with slight blue undertones. In regards to formula and wear it is fantastic again. Bold, bright and not patchy. Also better with a lip brush.
Dare To Bare
Avon mark. Liquid Lip Lacquer Matte in Dare To Bare |
Dare To Bare is a darker nude shade than Whipped Latte. I applied this with a lip brush and it made for far more precise application. It took longer, but was able to blend it better too. It may need two coats.
TKO
Avon mark. Liquid Lip Lacquer Matte in TKO |
TKO is a bright Barbie pink that has great pigmentation, is bold and very vibrant.
Head Turner
Avon mark. Liquid Lip Lacquer Matte in Head Turner |
Head Turner is a bit of a stunner. It is a bright red with orange undertones. The photos don't do the vividness of this shade any justice at all. It's sooo bright! Head Turner is such an apt name for sure.
Plump Up The Jam
Avon mark. Liquid Lip Lacquer Matte in Plump Up The Jam |
Plump Up The Jam is a very blue-purple. In some lights it could easily be mistaken for blue. This shade took a couple of layers to get the full colour, but that comes with the issue of becoming thick and gloopy.
Maneater
Avon mark. Liquid Lip Lacquer Matte in Maneater |
Maneater is a redder purple. It took a couple of layers but still seemed slightly patchy and it bled a little too.
Avon mark. Liquid Lip Lacquer Shine
Avon mark. Liquid Lip Lacquer |
General Points:
With this collection I only have a few to show you.
They have quite a thick formula, not something to wear if you like lightweight lipstick.
They are far easier to apply than the matte shades, but that is to be expected. The lightest shades also appear to be more pigmented and less patchy, but they still are a little streaky. The darkest again seem to be thinner and caused the most issues in regards to application with this finish due to being patchy and not as easily buildable.
Nudeitude
Avon mark. Liquid Lip Lacquer Shine in Nudeitude |
Nudeitude is closest in shade to Dare to Bare as a mid-tone nude shade. Nice formula, but it is creamy and slightly streaky. However, it does feel quite moisturising and like a thick gloss. Again better with the lip brush.
Blushing
Avon mark. Liquid Lip Lacquer Shine in Blushing |
Blushing is a creamy baby pink shade. It is a little streaky but again also quite moisturising. Better formula than the matte baby pink, Pinking About You.
Lacquered Up
Avon mark. Liquid Lip Lacquer Shine in Lacquered Up |
Lacquered Up is another very vibrant red with orange undertones. This is the Head Turner shade in gloss form. Just like Head Turner, it is super bright in person and yet again the photo doesn't do it justice! A great shade. Apologies for the dodgy application though
Dark & Stormy
Avon mark. Liquid Lip Lacquer Shine in Dark & Stormy |
Dark & Stormy is a dark, wine purple shade. This was very hard to get a non-patchy finish with. The more I tried to even it out, the streakier, goopier, thicker and more uncomfortable it became and it also settled into the cracks as well as feather around the outside too.
Avon mark. Liquid Lip Lacquer |
Overall I'm really liking the majority of the new Avon mark. Liquid Lip Lacquer collection. Personally, the two lightest matte shades of the range were a miss for me, but the mid-shades in particular were outstanding. The dark shades were a little thin and therefore need extra work, and this in turn makes them heavier and more likely to end up on your teeth.
It's hard for me to say whether the lightest shine shades have the same issues as the matte ones, but Nudeitude, whilst being a tiny bit streaky, was far better than the lightest ones I tried on the matte side. With that said, the matte equivalent of Nudeitude, Dare to Bare, was also a drastic improvement on the lighter shades, so take this how you will.
The darker shades on the shine side had the same faults as the darkest on the matte side. They both require more work to apply and are rather thin, but are quite bold when built up.
With both the matte and the shine finishes, I found a lip brush worked better than the provided applicator which made for a messier outline and also in some cases a rather patchy finish. With the darkest shades a mix of both the applicator and a lip brush seem to work best though.
I do prefer the matte finish over the shine. The shine formula may be easier to work with and applies faster, but the finish of the matte shades is better. With that said, there is more consistency with the shine shades and the lighter shades appear to be a bit better than the lighter ones of the matte range. The dark shades in both have their issues though.
If I were to recommend particular shades, I'd point to the reds, pinks and bright purples of the matte collection. They're bold and vibrant and long-wearing as well as being the easiest to apply.
